Explorer browser. Microsoft does dominate the computer industry today and whether it will tomorrow is up for grabs. There has been talk about competition and Microsoft has had some legal
problems. Still, many agree that during the twentieth century, Microsoft is a corporation hard to beat. An article from the Economist provides an analogy to demonstrate the companys prowess. It
reads: "Without pushing the analogy too far, Microsoft can be seen as the dominant nation in the digital realm--just as America is in the material world. With Windows, its rulers
control the largest, richest digital territory: a software platform on which others can build, with its say-so, applications out of bits and bytes" ("Microsoft," 2003, 65). Microsoft defends its influence
and calls it an ecosystem (2003). One can say that the firm had engaged in a sort of unilateralism as it would embrace features created by others into its
own operating system ("Microsoft," 2003). This would create a situation where smaller software companies would have difficulty (2003). They simply could not compete. There had in fact been "wars"
with rivals, an example of which is Netscape, a company that threatened to form a new software platform online (2003). Bill Gates, the company founder, embraced a "doctrine of
global sovereignty" but things have changed and the assertive foreign policy that was once decided as viable had been reconsidered (2003). Finally, the firm realizes that this stance of unilateralism
is not good for business (2003). Yet, it is important to examine the toll that the company had taken due to the fact that it had been aligned with a
