Gates was able to dominate the computer software market, but when he did so, he angered competitors and the government saw him as a pariah and an unfair marketer. Gates
ran into trouble with the feds due to his sale of his Internet Explorer browser that was sold along with the Windows operating system. The gist of the problem is
that he was charged with creating a monopoly. Because he provided the browser free of charge with the most popular O/S, no other firm had a chance. This was especially
problematic for Java and Netscape. Some background information may help to understand what occurred exactly. Windows was introduced in 1987 ("Gates," 2004). As Microsofts software became popular, the U.S.
Justice Department began a series of antitrust investigations against the company (2004). The gist of the problem is that Microsoft is viewed as a company that has dominated the market
with predatory practices. However, many ordinary citizens and executives do not see Microsofts practices as problematic. A quote from 1995 concerning the company is: "Microsoft bashers should stop whining and
let competition take its natural course in the software arena" (Anderson, 1995, p. 106). However, someone on the other side of the fence replied: "Thats crazy. Microsoft is on a
rampage, and the Department of Justice should rein the company in" (1995, p.106). In looking at the issue, one point seems to be important. No other company has come
up with an operating system that has surpassed Windows in terms of popularity. In fact, despite the lawsuits and all the hoopla surrounding it, it is a Windows world. The
suit did change life for Bill Gates however. In November 1999, when the U.S. District Court issued a preliminary decision that Microsoft was a monopoly, Gates stepped down as the
