American classrooms are becoming increasingly diverse as well. There are many advantages to this diversity but in order to realize these advantages there are also obstacles which must be overcome. However, when those obstacles are indeed overcome, the results can be very dramatic and very rewarding. In this way then, culturally diverse teachers are clearly an advantage to the system since they are able to lead by example. The Mexican-American teacher for example is able to promote discussion and acceptance of culturally diverse issues by using their own culture to lead the way. How the Mexican American Culture of a Teacher Influences The Classroom The "increase in diversity among the student population is one of the greatest challenges facing teachers" (Cultural Diversity in the Classrooms, 2002). Therefore, this is clearly a topic which must be seriously addressed, and the first step is for teachers themselves to examine their own culture and examine their own biases (Cultural Diversity in the Classrooms, 2002). Then, it is important to examine the backgrounds of students, to determine their cultural biases as well (Cultural Diversity in the Classrooms, 2002). "Classroom instruction can be designed to connect the content of a course with students backgrounds" (Cultural Diversity in the Classrooms, 2002). Cultural diversity in America and in American classrooms is a fact (Billingsley, 2002).
