Franz Kafkas "The Metamorphosis" is a classic twentieth century tale of science fiction blended with personal introspect. It provides a look in to the soul of the author as
well as into the soul of the time in which he lived. Kafka sums up the plot of his short story with the opening line:
"When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed
into a monstrous vermin". The protagonist of the story is a mild-mannered lonely
salesman who, although not very good at his job, is attempting to support his parents and sister. He is, in fact, the sole breadwinner of a family in which
the father is too fat to work, the mother too ill, and the sister too young. The "vermin" into which Samsa is transformed
is a large beetlelike insect. The young protagonist has been transformed overnight by some fluke of nature or fate into a being which is so radically different from his
original form that he is subsequently rejected by all who know him. He is no longer welcome in his own home, he is alienated from society in general.
Even in the face of the physical transformation, however, Samsa remains driven by his deep commitment to his family. Because
after his transformation he is so different in appearance and behavior, even his once sympathetic and supportive sister finds that she can not tolerate this new being. She is
