But, for the most part the minor characters serve to help us understand the main character, they serve to influence and direct the main character, and the sometimes even hold the fate of the primary character in their hand. Bearing these realities, and possibilities, in mind we present the following paper which discusses "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka and "The Stranger" by Albert Camus as they relate to the minor characters. The paper then compares the minor characters and their significance in both stories. The Metamorphosis In "The Metamorphosis" we have a tale of one mans condition. He has awoken to find himself transformed into what appears to be a cockroach. He is essentially very helpless in this physical state and must, therefor, rely on others, namely his family. Though many may consider them to be main characters, we are focusing on Gregor as the main character and all others being minor. The primary minor characters are Grete Samsa, who is Gregors sister. She takes care of him, pitying him, and feeding him. There is Gregors father who would rather his son did not exist. And, there is Gregors mother who is of a similar opinion as the father. There is also Gregors boss. Other minor characters are the lodgers in the home who the parents try to keep Gregor away from. After Gregor finds himself transformed, and while he is worrying about getting to work, "Gregors employer who had come to Gregors house to fetch him to work, leaves in a very nervous state and Gregor worries about losing his job" (Anonymous The Metamorphosis By Franz Kafka themetamorphosis.htm).
