that is very disjointed in many ways, taking the reader, and the main character, from one point in time to another, from one culture to another, never really delineating from
a traditional linear line in relationship to story telling. As such it is something of a difficult novel to decipher in relationship to what his ultimate message is, although one
can well argue that it is clearly an anti-war novel. This is to say that while the anti-war element may not be the only theme in the novel, it is
clear and obviously an important one. With that in mind the following paper examines various elements of ideals in the story, such as belief and fate and free will and
the obvious nature of the anti-war sentiment. The Message in Slaughterhouse-Five In this novel it is quite evident that in many respects the main character, Billy Pilgrim, is
a man who is somehow destined to travel through time and place without any control. This is an element that clearly speaks of fate and a lack of free will
to some extent. However, at the same time, at least in his early years, Billy is a man who is religious and thus believes in free will. His life shows
him otherwise it would seem as he is tossed from one time period to another, from one culture to another, even being abducted by aliens. The sheer complexity of this
sort of a plotline, wherein Billy has no control over where or when he goes, clearly indicates that in some ways human beings have no control and are thus destined
to some sort of fate. This is also seen in the words of one author who illustrates how Vonnegut, after his own experience with war, had to try to deal
