to their past, there is a semblance of relief. They are able to once and for all create a memory of a prior condition that is permanent and real. Usually,
memoirs are most interesting when the life of the author is different from the norm. Author Nahid Rachlin had an unusual life. She lived in Ahvaz for a time but
when she was six months old she was taken to Tehran and actually given to her aunt (Bender). Why? Her aunt Maryam was infertile and always wanted a baby (Bender).
When Nahid was six months old she was given away as a gift from one sister to another (Bender). Rachlin, in the context of Persian Girls explains it this
way: "I was a gift to Maryam from her younger sister, Mohtaram. I was Mohtarams seventh baby, her fifth living child (two had died). Maryam hadnt been able to get
pregnant when she was married. Then she became a widow" (4). Nahid was not happy about this predicament. She says in an interview: "I couldnt accept my aunts explanation that
it was destiny that I was given to her" (Bender). It is a difficult thing to fathom. To top it all off, when she was nine years old, her father
went to bring her back home in a forceful manner (Bender). She was taken from the only mother she knew, even if that woman was really her aunt. Rachlin found
that writing had a cathartic effect and she reports that it was calming in a chaotic atmosphere (Bender). Yet, while Rachlin enjoyed writing, that was perhaps not enough to propel
