of the play? Yes and no. The themes of the play are huge, and universal: what does it mean to be human? Why are we here? Is there anything after
death? How should we conduct our lives? The play remains popular some 400 years after Shakespeare wrote it because it does address these monumental human issues in a fascinating way.
However, it fails in part because Zeffirelli has cut more than two hours (an uncut Hamlet can run almost 4 1/2 hours) so hes slashed out huge chunks of
dialogue that give real psychological depth to the characters. He has retained most of Hamlets long speeches, though some of them have been pared down drastically as well; its a
sort of Cliff Notes version of Hamlet. Hes also dropped some of the characters: Fortinbras, who is left to take over the kingdom after the wholesale slaughter in Act V,
doesnt even appear; Osric is tuned down to nothing. This version might be best used as an introduction to the story for those who are unfamiliar with it; then if
the instructor has any sense he or she will run the Kenneth Branagh uncut version the following week. However, it must be said that Mel Gibson is entirely believable
in the role. He worked hard, he understands the character and he brings him to vivid life on the screen. The fault, if there is one, lies in Zeffirelli cutting
