For example, the Christianisation of Britain began, with the conversion of many Pagan Saxons by St Augustine. Britain had been to a great extent Christian under Roman rule, but the later invasion of the Saxons had brought with it increased Paganism even though the ruling monarch was Christian. Christianity continued to spread, although from the Arab world there were encroachments of the Muslim empire, particularly into Spain, which would later lead to conflicts between the two groups particularly with regard to trading routes. In the eighth century the failing Roman empire was reconstituted, and the emperor Charlemagne was a significant influence on the way in which the authority of the papacy was restored in Western Europe. He directly linked the power of government to religious reform, and brought the clergy under the jurisdiction of the crown. Pagans was forced to convert, and the emperor also introduced the tithe, a tax of all income which was designed to support the state religion.
