beneficial in addressing several of mans ailments. While today we grown roses primarily for their beauty, it hasnt been that long ago in history since mankind was propagating roses
primarily for its medicinal properties. A number of medicines, in fact, can be derived from the rose. Johnston (2004) reports:
"The medicinal values of roses were observed as early as the first century A. D. when Pliny the Elder recorded 32 different medicinal
uses for the plant and was retained throughout history". The healing properties of roses
have, therefore, been acknowledge for centuries. Chinese folklore reflects an even earlier historical reference, if more esoteric than pharmacological, to the roses healing qualities. Sheiseido Inc. (1999) reports
that in the 6th century BC. the lyric poet Anacreon of Greece sang praises to the rose, praises that rose balm "calms the heart that beats in agony". A
more plausible accolade of the rose, however, is found in the oldest known Chinese Book of Medicinal Plants which claims that medicines derived from roses are "effective for dropsy and
constipation" (Sheiseido, Inc, 1999). A member of the Rosaceae family and the genus Rosa, the roses are presumed by many to have
