This 20 page paper looks at how and why government may seek to influences the media at times of crisis and conflict with specific assessment of the press reporting of the massacre in Uludere, Turkey in December 2011. The paper presents a literature review looking at the role and control of the media and then assesses the reporting of the event in two major Turkish newspapers; Hurriyet and Zamann. Using articles published in the 7 days following the massacre the articles are examined to assess the way that the content presented and is either aligned or at odds with the government rhetoric. The bibliography cites 30 sources.

Reporting 17 5.3 Zaman Reporting 18 6. Discussion 19 References 21 1. Introduction The media is the principle source of information regarding current events, citizens in any country will rely on their media to communicate
the news. This is true of any type of current event, but may be seen as particularly true during crisis events. Without the media even crisis events would remain unknown
and unreported at local or international level. However, the way that the new is reported may be subject to many influences, including government pressure or influences. This may skew the
news which is reported and ion some cases even whether or not it is reported. In the global environment where there is a high level of communication technology concealing an
event may be difficult, as the Chinese government found out in 1989 in the now infamous event in Tiananmen Square (Nathan, 2001). This increased global interconnectivity reduces the potential for
events to be hidden, but it still facilitates and in some cases supports the governments ability to influence the way reporting takes place. Recently in Turkey, where military actions have
resulted in the deaths of 351 civilians at Uludere following an aerial air strike on the 28th December 2011 there is the ability to see the way that media reporting
has some biases reflecting to apparent level of influence the government has over the sources of the news and their attempts to manipulate the perceptions of this crisis event.
1.1 Aim of the Research The main focus of this paper will be the way that the Turkish government may have influenced reporting
