on public opinion, and at no time in recent history has this been more true than in the months following the attacks of September 11, 2001. News stories reported
the atrocities that occurred and the loss of life, creating an immediate call to arms for American soldiers, American rescue workers and large scale support operations (like the American Red
Cross blood donor program). The news media reported the attacks as an impetus for war, and created changes in public opinion on everything from the need for war to
emerging negative views of Muslims (including Muslim Americans). Between September 2001 and the Spring of 2002, significant changes in public opinion reflected the influence of the mass media.
Problem Statement Bias in news reporting is an ethical dilemma. Though journalists are taught that they should provide all
angles of a story and do the best to report without bias, simply deciding to report on a story determines a basis for some bias by the journalist. In
truth, though, the news media demonstrates a greater degree of bias in their reporting process than one might think. The modern media not only decides what stories are important,
but also determine how the stories should be shaped for emotional effect, for political purposes and for directing public opinion. Following the attacks
of September 11, 2001, the news media concentrated on certain aspects of the story that shaped public opinion about the events. Initially, many were surprised at the extent of
coverage, because news coverage began just after the first plane hit the first tower of the World Trade Center, resulting in film footage of the second attack. One might
