The media serves an important intermediary in the contemporary American political system. The media is, in fact, one of the most influential elements of modern society.
It is also a somewhat flawed institution. Both the medias importance and its problems are linked to their savvy in using words and images to manipulate our understanding and
perceptions. This is particularly true of the electronic media but the print media shares some of the guilt as well. Indeed, because of its doublespeak and supreme finesse
in the ability to use loaded words and bias, the media can be considered one of the most influential entities of the modern world. While we are most definitely
better informed about current world events as a result of newspapers, television and radio, we are also subject to manipulation by the media. The medias role, however, has changed
in recent years. While the American public might be more dependent on it the government has become more and more resistant to it. The level of governmental resistance to
the media that we are witnessing in contemporary times has its roots in the latter half of the twentieth century. The medias so-called "flaw" is therefore a relatively recent
arrival on the political scene. There is no questioning the fact that the print and electronic media alike play a direct role in
the way the American public, in particular, perceives the world around us and our place in that world. The media is most definitely an important intermediary in contemporary politics.
