greater number of undocumented workers, the concern about safety is even more significant. In an article by Gonzalez (2005), it is noted that three meatpacking plants are failing to protect
the labor force, but the information comes from a group called Human Rights Watch. It is also noted that the meat industry refutes the claims (Gonzalez, 2005). Human Rights Watch
claims that the workplace includes many risks, particularly when it comes to immigrants (Gonzalez, 2005). There in fact has been systematic human rights violations reported, and many have to do
with immigrants (Gonzalez, 2005). Human Rights Watch embraces concepts related to international treaties (Gonzalez, 2005). Of course, Human Rights Watch is somewhat biased. Gonzales (2005) reports: "Human Rights Watch is
a privately funded group whose goal is to hold governments accountable if they violate the rights of their people. Its researchers said they interviewed meatpacking workers and examined injury reports,
government and academic studies, newspaper reports and legal proceedings" (p.1). Many dispute the claims of the organization, saying that the safety record is better now, not worse (Gonzalez, 2005).
Tyson accuses the organization to being aligned with organized labor (Gonzalez, 2005). Indeed, there could be a motive that goes beyond merely reporting problems in the industry. Yet, while it
is arguable as to the degree of safety problems inherent in the industry, it is safe to say that making changes is always prudent. It is always reasonable to vie
on the side of safety. Further, the industry leaders like Tyson are certainly biased as well. In examining this issue, it is fair to say that embracing safety as a
