Sometimes the title refers to one particular event in the story, or a subtle idea, or a location, or any number of things. In Jeanette Wintersons novel we have a
title that speaks volumes, even if we do not know anything about the story itself. When we read the title we may think it is a story about perhaps someone
who literally is connected with oranges somehow, perhaps one who lives with an orange grove. But, perhaps more likely, is the fact that we will imagine an ideal, a moral,
that argues that there is far more out there than one particular thing. It offers us a symbolic understanding of how life is not always simple and there is more
than one way to live life, and more than one way to see life. With that in mind the following paper examines the development of the main character, Jeanette, as
it relates to this particular concept. Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit In "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit" by Jeanette Winterson we are presented with a young
girl who is seemingly content with her life. She is born into an incredibly rigid Christian family and her faith is a very powerful part of who she is. In
the beginning she has no doubts about the importance or the validity of such faith. And, in all honesty, there is something to this foundation that she keeps with her
throughout all her transitions into adulthood. She feels she is special, because of her religion, and is, in many ways, without a strong personality as she simply seems to
