associate professor of politics and African American studies at Princeton University" (p.C01). In other words, there was a small group of the black elite, but that is changing. Some say
that Obama has paved the way for change, but is that true? It just may be the case that Obama is simply a product of the civil rights movement.
Sometimes it is difficult to see what came first-whether Obama is making history, or he is just a part of it-but one can certainly see that Obamas victory comes a
long time after the Civil Rights movement ended. Still, while it has taken a very long time to elect a black president, it has only been after a number of
politicians paved the way that this was possible. A student presents a statement for discussion: " Were it not for Jesse Jackson there would be no Barack Obama. Obamas campaign
is not a repudiation of the civil rights struggle but a direct product of it." There is some debate perhaps in regard to whether or not the statement is true.
One can easily see that Obama had become president many years after the movement, and also that politicians in between-Alan Keyes, Jesse Jackson, Carol Moseley-Braun-have to some extent broken through
barriers. Yet, it would take this one individual to become president after others had failed. Why would one man suddenly become president when others who came before him were not
able to accomplish the same feat? One could say that he was a product of the civil rights era and that everything leading up to his presidency had paved the
