and piercings and what they mean to them. Discussion The Discovery Channel premiered a show a couple of years ago called Miami Ink, about a tattoo parlor in Miami Beach
and the colorful artists who run it. Each week viewers saw not only the tattoos on the artists, but they also got to meet people who came in to get
tattoos. The reasons were not at all standard: they werent getting their girlfriends name done or a gang mark of some kind. Often they wanted to memorialize a special event,
like a birth (or death); the tattoo would be a permanent reminder of the loss, in effect a permanent memorial so they would never forget. Also, a surprising number of
the customers were women. The show brought in a guest tattoo artist named Kat von D; Kat is from L.A. She and the Miami crew didnt work out, but the
audience apparently loved her because L.A. Ink is now on the air, and audiences can watch the antics of the West Coast tattoo artists as well as their colleagues in
the east. The popularity of the shows speaks to the popularity of the practice of tattooing itself, which is now becoming mainstream. The most interesting question is really why
people get tattoos or piercings in the first place. Despite claims to the contrary, both procedures are painful; depending on the location of the tattoo or piercing, it can become
excruciating. And yet it is getting more popular by the day. In 2001, MSNBC ran a TV special, Skin Deep, which found that "twenty percent of the American population is
tattooed."1 Experts theorize that part of the appeal of tattoos is the fact that they are not a "fad," or the latest designer fashion which will be worn for six
