time in popular culture and within the soap opera itself. A student writing on this subject should note that soap operas have traditionally been aimed at housewives who stayed home,
raised children and cared for their homes. Their sponsors were often soap and detergent companies, which is why they are called soaps. Today, while many soap operas linger, they are
not targeted exclusively for homemakers who purchase the household products, but also for teenagers and men. Today, womens lives are complicated and the typical stay at home mom is a
rarity. Still, soap operas are a traditional favorite amongst women. On Search for Tomorrow, it seems that the main character, Joanne, was the good girl. In stereotypical fashion, Joanne is
needy. She needs men and by going it alone--at least at the beginning-- there is a sense of strength that shines through. In the end, she needs to be rescued.
Joanne succumbs to the help of thieves but at the very end of the soaps life, she is rescued by the natural forces that loom. Other women in the show
are not quite as lucky. They are the bad girls who do not escape natures wrath nor the strong arm of the law. Joanne, the protagonist, had endured a lifetime
of woe, beginning with the death of her husband. The widow was seemingly manipulated by a myriad of folk, inclusive of her in-laws, the Mafia and well meaning friends. In
some way, Joanne signifies strength. The manager of a hotel, this widow had taken on a business and this to some extent demonstrates that women can do it all. While
raising a daughter alone, Joanne to some extent exhibits strength and one may want to compare her to Lorelai on the WBs Gilmore Girls. In the contemporary drama, Lorelai is
