This is seemingly a threat to the black community. The noose is symbolic of the lynching that would take place in the South years prior. Later, a student by the
name of Justin Barker was beat by the black students in retaliation, and the six students charged in the assault were arrested and charged with second-degree murder ("In La., a
missed opportunity ignites a racial uproar"). To the black community, the charges were an insult. It suggested that whites and blacks are treated differently in the criminal justice system. Further,
those who were responsible for hanging the nooses were hardly punished. In the case at hand, six black students beat up a white student, and because it took place
in Jena, Louisiana, the case would come to be known as Jena 6. The case is something that has caused a great deal of commotion as it would demonstrate the
racism that continues to exist in a society that is supposed to be beyond that. After all, a black presidential candidate is on the 2008 ticket, but still, racism has
not yet been eradicated. The facts of the case suggest that racism against black people is still ever-present. Also, charges that the six students were unfairly charged hint at a
legal system that is not fair to African Americans. The question that Jena 6 truly poses is, is the justice system unfair to black people? The answer is not crystal
