It is something that has come to be recognized throughout the world as a fast food giant that does have a great deal of competition but also one that has
seemed to rise above setbacks. Also, because everyone knows McDonalds so well, the term McDonaldization has been used to explain changes in the world. In his book The McDonaldization of
Society, Ritzer (1993) suggests that the system that McDonalds uses has actually been a system that controls society. Thus, while management style just seems to make good business sense,
its techniques actually do more than operate a business. Obviously, McDonalds has done something right in the public relations department as it has not stopped people from going to
its establishment despite some setbacks. It has managed to market its brand effectively throughout the ups and downs that companies inevitably face. First, it pays to look at some of
the hardships faced by this industry giant. It had to approach some legal hurdles that made for public relations nightmares in recent years. It turns out that their coffee is
too hot as evidenced by a lawsuit regarding an individual who dropped a cup of their piping hot coffee and sued the company. While many people thought that the suit
was ridiculous it was bad publicity for McDonalds. Another problem is the recent lawsuits against the fast food industry that charges it lures customers in and gets them hooked on
fattening food. Obese people have tried to get money from these companies due to their promotion of unhealthy fare. Many of the fast food companies are fighting back with healthy
choices and McDonalds is on that bandwagon. It recently introduced and is forcefully promoting a fruit and walnut salad. Not too long ago it introduced happy meals for adults
