Sosa explains that the Maya are not a vanished culture but a viable civilization, with a population of some 7 million individuals; 1 million living on the Yucatan Peninsula in
Mexico and the other 6 million living in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and southern Mexico. They are culturally distinct because of their language; he stresses that it is the
Maya language that makes them Maya. Sosa gives a very brief history of the Maya and the impact of colonialism on their culture. He ends the section by
saying that this is a personal issue for him since he is Maya and that he has written a story to illustrate the richness of his heritage. II -
The Story The story is a series of vignettes that tell a reader what Maya life is like today. It opens as the main character, Don Paco Puc
Dzib, reflects on the birth of his son and the way the boy has lived his life. Don Paco has remained in the village, a cornfarmer while Honorio
moved away to work as a waiter in Cancun. Don Paco notes that although he would not have made the same choice, as a parent it is his
duty to support his children as they live their own lives. Honorio is on his way back to the village that day to take part in a ceremony
to bring rain. The women meet to grind corn. They discuss the impact of the outside world on their culture. They agree people have no right to criticize
