use existing research frameworks to meaningfully explore even abstract sociological topics through the use of qualitative metrics, appropriate operationalization of variables, correct selection of method and instrumentation, and adopting the
right frame of mind when it comes to interpretation of results. Research Problem The particular sociological problem that this paper will explore is the phenomenon of how
individuals perception of political turmoil in foreign countries is altered by psychological and physical distance from that turmoil. This is a topic of particular interest in todays world where political
turmoil is a pervasive reality, and a significant percentage of the world population lives under the dominion of autocratic and dictatorial regimes; many of which are seemingly unhesitant about even
the use of physical violence to restrain and control the citizenry. Unfortunately, such regimes are nothing new to the world; at any given point in history, there has generally been
at least one state power around the world that could be recognized as tyrannical or repressive. This being the case, however, the experience of individuals living under such regimes in
the past may well be useful for understanding and interpreting the phenomenon as it stands today. Such sociological insights would be of indisputable value. As an example of how
such research might be carried out, one might speculatively consider "country X", a state in Europe wherein the population is comprised of a number of different nationalities. During the 1980s,
