This observation is troubling, but what does the author mean by this? What are the conditions that exist in the United States that could foster the seeds of destruction? Why
is America on a downward spiral, and what other questions does that observation raise? It appears that the meaning of the observation is that openness is equated with honesty. It
is also equated with legitimacy, but the reality is that the American people vote by sound bites. There is a sense that democracy and government is something that is reduced
to marketing savvy, and not to actual issues. Many people can see this today as the 2008 candidates emerge. People talk about the candidates in very superficial terms. Some
people want to vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a woman and today, a politically correct society wants to do something they deem as relevant and progressive. Of course,
this type of thinking can undermine democracy, despite the fact that people should have their own points of view. Zakaria (2004) does seem to make sense in that the general
populous has been "dumbed down" and one should have a real concern that the public is politically illiterate. They buy into the notion that others are superior to them,
and that politicians know what they are doing. Then, the general public does not care about the details. Often, people will vote for the charismatic candidates. The idea that America
is aligned with a simple-minded populace could be the downfall of America and will undermine the freedoms that still exist. In part, mass media may be to blame for this
situation. Is it true that mass media is a culprit in the downplaying of American democracy? Does it foster or hinder the democratic model? At first glance, it would seem
