for "wedded bliss." However, Nathaniel Hawthorne married Sophia Peabody in 1854, and she did indeed influence his writing style and success. In 1937, at the age of 33, Hawthorne
published his first collection of stories entitled Twice Told Tales. Although he received good notices for his book, he did not gain the money he had hoped to(Ashbell pp).
At about this same time, he met Miss Sophia Peabody (a sort of American Elizabeth Barrett Browning)(1). The couple became engaged a year later .
The influence of one person on another in an engagement may be subtle or overt. It is certainly a time of exploration, reaction and absorption.
Each learns about the other, and then if all goes according to romantic formula the couple may decide to marry. It should also be remembered that the structure concerning
"relationship," was much more formal than it is today. And at that time if couples appeared to be compatible - not to mention in love- they would agree to
marry. Hawthorne chose to marry a spirited woman - spirited in more ways than one for Sophia Peabody , as a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, considered herself a
"transcendentalist." This was an idealistic philosophy influenced by the German writers Immanuel Kant and F. W. Schelling. It principally influenced essayists and poets -either directly or through the
mediation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas Carlyle. It considered itself a theology stressing self-culture and the human capacity for good. Transcendentalists sought to replace a religion of
