sovereignty (Lee, 2000). It was a monumental task. There were foreign, and particularly Japanese, encroachments (1919). During the period, nationalism would function as a "touchstone of legitimacy" (2000, 116). It
was thought that in order for a foreign ideology or religion to be accepted as well as to have a chance of success there, it would have to be
identified with the sentiment (2000). Of course, the nationalism that arose would make no exception for Protestantism and by the time that the March First Movement would end, spiritual interests
of Protestantism were associated with the interests of Korea (2000). It is one association that is aligned with one of the decisive factors as it respects the increase of
Protestantism in Korea (2000). The movement was religious, at least to an extent, but it was more about freedom. It was secular, but many people who supported the movement
were religious. In part, the protesting that had occurred was about the freedom to practice any religion or to not practice. Essentially, the movement had as much to do with
a break from dominance as it did with religious freedom and one may associate the fervor with the zest that would come with the American Revolution. A fundamental difference is
that the Americans had more rapid success. The Koreans would have to wait through another world war in order to achieve the break they were looking for. Rang (2004) describes
