While adults are often the primary target of the abuse, children too often become the secondary victims. These children have not only been physically endangered, they have often
been humiliated and forced to endure pain and terror over a significant percentage of their daily lives. Even when violence is not directed at a familys children, in fact,
it can still have a tremendous effect on the way that that child will choose to live as an adult. A
young childs fate is directly tied to that of their families. Family welfare, in turn, is directly affected by a number of factors. Family stresses can include everything from
economics, to criminal activity, to substance abuse (NSW Child Death Review Team 2003, p. 1; Tomlison 2002, p. 1). These stresses impact the family not only directly but indirectly
through their connection with domestic abuse and the concerns that they raise in regard to child protection (Tomison 1996, p. 1).
Unfortunately, statistics demonstrate that children that grow up witnessing abuse too often perpetuate that abuse themselves or consider it a normal part
of a relationship and allow themselves to be subjected to it as adults (Stoppard, 2005). As Stoppard (2005) so aptly observes "a worse indictment of the society that we
live in today I find difficult to imagine". When families are engulfed in domestic violence the most innocent victims are often
