Abstract Tourism is becoming a greater and greater focus for a diversity of countries. Tourism offers another
means of attracting much needed revenues for these countries. The types of tourism opportunities that are available are about as diverse as the countries offering them. The U.S.
in particular offers a wide selection of tourism opportunities. Ecotourism and so-called nature-based tourism, for example, offer a different kind of recreational experience than archaeotourism. Adventure tourism is
yet another type of tourism as is alternative tourism. The goal for all types of tourism, of course, is to be sustainable, i.e. to offer a continued opportunity for
tourist while enduring no irreversible impact to the area being toured.
The tourism industry is the worlds largest industry (Williams, 1996). In the U.S. this industry is, in fact, our number one export (Williams,
1996). Tourism in the U.S. is second only to health care as the second largest employer (Williams, 1996). In addition it comprises the third largest retail
industry (Williams, 1996). In 1995 it was estimated that international tourist spent $20 billion more here than U.S. tourists spent abroad (Williams, 1996). This translates into
a significantly positive cash flow for the U.S. and emphasizes the importance of maintaining our attraction to the worlds tourists. Although
