student briefly set up facts about employment in psychology. Psychology is one profession that always seems to be in demand. As of 2000, there were some 182,000 jobs in the
United States related to psychology; the makeup of these jobs reveals much about the diverse range of employment opportunities enjoyed by psychologists (San Diego State University, 2010). Academic and other
educational institutions make up much of the employment base for psychologists, with 4 out of 10 psychologists being employed thereby; however, within this category, psychologists perform a variety of services
and functions besides teaching, such as "counseling, testing, research, and administration" (San Diego State University, 2010). Roughly 3 out of 10 were employed by health-related organizations such as hospitals, rehabilitations
centers, nursing homes, and so on, with the remainder of salaried psychologists occupying roles in government agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, or pursuing paths of private practice
and self-employment (San Diego State University, 2010). It is not uncommon for a psychologist to enter service with an institution to gain practical experience for many years before opening his
or her own private practice. Types of Psychological Specialties Within these institutions, or under the auspices of self-employment, psychologists fulfill a diverse array of functions. While all
