Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) results from a traumatic event involving psychological trauma. Although the terminology that
we use to describe it has changed, the condition has been known for generations. In World War II, for example, we identified the disorder as shell shock (Faces, 2010).
By the Vietnam War it had come to be known as combat fatigue (Faces, 2010). Today we have refined those names to focus more on the psychological impact
of the disorder than on the specific cause. Faces (2010) explains PTSD using the analogy of Pavlovs dog where the presentation of food
in conjunction with the ringing of a bell produces salivation in the dog. The psychological association between the food and the bell remains even when the food is ultimately
omitted and the bell is rung. The physiological response in the dog is salivation. In this example, of course, the relationship between the physical stimulus (the bell) and
the physiological response (the salivation) can be perceived as a positive one. Similar associations, however, can occur between negative physical stimuli and physiological and psychological responses. This is
