their creation; indeed, many of the most important characters from Greek literature do not belong to a single narrative, but rather show up in a diverse collection of stories told
by a body of different authors. This bespeaks of the tendency for Greek authors to draw characters from traditional myth and legend, as a conduit to thematically addressing what Aristotle
might refer to as "universal values". One prominent example of this is Agamemnon, a figure who appears quite prominently in the Iliad and the Odyssey, but who is also utilized
in other works to differing effect. This paper will explore the use of the character Agamemnon in Aiskhylos "Agamemnon", Sophokles "Electra", and Euripides "Orestes", with an eye towards understanding the
unique thematic purpose for which each author makes use of Agamemnon. This paragraph helps the student summarize the role of Agamemnon in Homers works. It is virtually impossible to discuss
any element of Greek narrative tradition without addressing the major works of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Agamemnon is a major figure in each of these works. Based upon
the legendary king of Mycenae, Agamemnon in the Iliad is depicted as the commander of the Greek forces which must mobilize to rescue Helen, the wife of Menelaus, after she
is kidnapped by Paris of Troy. He is depicted here as a very rigid individual, who often sacrifices humanity in the service of abstract notions of honor and service. For
instance, before leaving for the war, Agamemnon makes an unbidden sacrifice of his daughter Iphigenia, much to the horror of his wife Clytemnestra. During the course of the war, he
