his life in many different ways. It is a story of longing for youth and love, a story about missing the love that has become habit, and a story about
hope and appreciation. The following paper analyzes this short story by Lordan. The Man with the Lap Dog The story begins with an American man who now lives
in Ireland with his wife. His wife is from Ireland and they have retired there. As he takes his dog for a walk in the morning he meets a couple
from the United States. The husband is dying and the main character finds himself becoming incredibly fascinated with the wife, having fantasies that she may come back and they could
have a relationship of sorts. Of course he knows this is ridiculous, but as he meets with this couple every morning and thinks of things, he becomes more and more
irritated with his wife at home. Eventually the wife accompanies him on a walk and she meets the couple. She is warm and loving to them, and as she and
her husband walk off the main character begins to once more see the love he has for his own wife, and appreciates what they have together. Mark and Laura
are the American couple and they are simply trying to get in an adventure before Mark dies. They have always wanted to see Ireland and are getting to do that.
They are sad about the reality that Mark will die, but they are also appreciating every moment they have together. The main character is Lyle and his wife is Mary.
