Conrad are both stories of British invasion and of ultimate disaster in the face of arrogance and presumptuous notions. In both stories we have individuals, white men, who are seen as something of a god to the native people and in this we see the power, as well as the destruction, that is symbolic of the imperial colonial rule. The following paper examines the novel and the film in these respects. Gods in "The Man Who Would Be King" and "The Heart of Darkness" In the film "The Man Who Would Be King" we have two individuals, somewhat unscrupulous individuals, who are out to find a fortune, out to take advantage of a small region where they believe the could be rulers. In essence, although they are essentially outlaws in the colonial nationality of the British, they represent the British colonial ideas in their desires. And, these desires lead to a point where they are perhaps quite successful in ruling a people. One critic notes that Daniel, having been shot with an arrow, is able to remove it without harm. "The natives are amazed to see Daniel pull the arrow from his chest without injury; they believe him to be a god who cannot be killed by the weapons of mere humans" (BritMovie). They deem him a god and believe that he is "the incarnation of Alexander the Great, and Daniel attempts to make then give up their riches to him" (BritMovie). In Conrads novel we see how Kurtz, though never referred to as a god, is seemingly treated as one: "His ascendancy was extraordinary.
