but as they assume they are. They present themselves as very pious and honorable people who are essentially the "salt of the earth," when, in fact, they are dishonorable, greedy,
and selfish individuals. In the following paper we illustrate how these townspeople present themselves in one manner, to the public, but how, in reality, they are surely otherwise. The paper
addresses how Twain stresses this reality by focusing on the Richards, the nineteeners, the names of the couple within the story, as well as through the opening passage of the
short story. Hadleyburg In the opening passage of Twains story we see a town that is, or was, perhaps unlike any other. Twain begins with "It was many
years ago" and then states that "Hadleyburg was the most honest and upright town in all the region round about. It had kept that reputation unsmirched during three generations, and
was prouder of it than of any other of its possessions" (NA). It was a vain town for it upheld that it was by far the most righteous of all
towns. They claimed that righteous attitudes and behavior were taught from the cradle onward, making sure the town was inhabited by none but the most righteous and honorable. Their vanity
ran deep: "The neighbouring towns were jealous of this honourable supremacy, and affected to sneer at Hadleyburgs pride in it and call it vanity; but all the same they were
obliged to acknowledge that Hadleyburg was in reality an incorruptible town; and if pressed they would also acknowledge that the mere fact that a young man hailed from Hadleyburg was
