In the following paper we examine "The Maltese Falcon" discussing the film as it relates to its genre, and then discussing the character of Sam Spade. The paper then discusses the relevancy of the time period in which the film was created. The Film as Genre "The Maltese Falcon is the granddaddy of the modern detective movie, as well as the first of the film noir genre....It literally drips with prewar style, and a mastery of black-and-white cinematography" (Anonymous The Maltese Falcon, 2002; the-maltese-falcon.htm). It is a dark and sinister film about a detective, a detective who is not necessarily likable. And, all the characters in the film are equally unlikable. As one author states, it is a film with "A gallery of high-living" lowlifes who "will stop at nothing to get their sweaty hands on a jewel-encrusted falcon. Detective Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart) wants to find out why - and wholl take the fall" (Galloway, 2002; maltesefalcon.shtml). It is, as such, heralded as "film historys first film noir and Bogarts break through role after years as a Warner contract player" (Galloway, 2002; maltesefalcon.shtml). As we can see from this simple description, the film leaves us wondering about the importance of this particular falcon. And, it is also important to note that the falcon itself is not really that important, for the focus of the film is on the characters and the mystery which evolves.
