court them. Rather than paying attention to their feelings many believe that men do not sympathize with the female plight. Additionally, it is thought that men and women are completely
different when it comes to feelings and developing a sense of self. While there does seem to be underlying gender variations, it is not true that the male is
not as deep or intricate as the female. They feel the same emotions, have trouble with developing a sense of self and do despair at times. In fact, it is
often said that the males sense of who he is, is most often tied to his career. Men are seen as defining themselves by their title or material possessions. Yet,
males too go within to derive a sense of self. In fact, paradoxically, the research seems to indicate that more often than not, women derive their sense of self through
others. It seems that, to women, close friendships take a central place in their lives whereas men are not as likely to have as many close, male friends. Further, men
and women relate to others differently. While a man may have just as active a social life as a female counterpart, the female is more likely to have close personal
relationships from which she derives her sense of self. II. What is a Sense of Self? At around the age of five, a child begins to become
aware of who he or she is; at the time, they begin to differentiate into categories of social self, academic persona, and who he or she is in terms
