It was a very diverse, and also complex, time that is still examined and analyzed. The following paper looks at one work addressing the fall of communism, and the fall of the Iron Curtain, The Magic Lantern by Timothy Garton Ash. The Magic Lantern by Timothy Garton Ash For the most part the revolution of 1989 involved Warsaw, Budapest, Berlin and Prague, all regions that had been under communist control to one extent or another. In Ashs work he examines each region separately, illustrating, for example, how one particular region, Poland, saw change through an election and another region, Hungary, achieved change through activism. But, it is also important to understand that he does not necessarily see the changes are true revolutions but rather refers to them as refolutions: "Even in Poland and Hungary, what was happening could still hardly be described as revolution. It was in fact, a mixture of reform and revolution. At the time, I called it refolution. There was a strong and essentially element of change from above, led by an enlightened minority in the still ruling communist parties. But there was also a vital element of popular pressure from below" (Ash, 1993; 14). He further indicates that the causes of these refolutions were perhaps very historical and gradual in coming around. He does, however, note that the beginnings could be traced back inot May olf 1988 when "in Poland the refolution began with strikes, in Hungary, with a Party conference" which ultimately replaced an important figure with another who was considered "pragmatic and dynamic" (Ash, 1993; 14).
