Madrasa have been critical components of Islamic culture for centuries. In the general sense the madrasa is a school, a school that concentrates on instilling the
Islamic scholarly tradition. In the contemporary sense, however, the madrasa has been heavily associated with radical Islam, associated with training the terrorists that are wreaking havoc around the world.
The intent of this paper is to first explore the historical origin of the madrasa and then to illuminate their contemporary role in supporting militancy and training young people
to become terrorists. It has been contended by some authors that madrasas are not deserving of the association with terrorism that
they seem to have amassed. Noor, Sikand and van Bruinessen (11), for example, contend that the negative opinion of the madrasa that seems to be consuming the modern world
is actually attributable to the mass media. The media has become particularly focused on the madrasa since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US (Noor, Sikand and
van Bruinessen 11). Most of that focus is exceedingly negative. Noor, Sikand and van Bruinessen (11) are quick to point out that
although the media has promoted the view that the madrasa are "breeding grounds for terrorists", there is little provable association between these schools and the terrorists that have made recent
