However, it is only recently that the technology has been able to develop to a level where this has become a viable development. To consider the potential for a translation device that will translate speech in a bi-directional manner, with specific attention to translations between Indian and Chinese the industry itself can be examined and then the potential market for such a device can be considered. 2. The Industry Until recently there has only been one viable option for those who want or need speech to speech language translation; the use of a human translator who is proficient in both languages. This demand for translation is a large and growing industry. It is estimated that by 2013 the total market for translation services as a whole will increase to US $25 billion, from a market that was worth only US $14.5 billion in 2008 (Romaine and Rishardson, 2009). This equates to a compound growth rate of 10.8% per annum (Romaine and Rishardson, 2009). At the current time the majority of the industry revenues for the global top 30 translation firms come from the US and the UK which account for 62.1% of the industry and 14.9% of the industry revenues respectively (Romaine and Rishardson, 2009).
