ever be justified? According to Machiavelli, it seems so, although he certainly looks down upon it. And while it seems to be the case that the theorist sees cruelty as
necessary or at least acceptable in certain places and at certain times, there is a sense that he knows it is wrong. Machiavelli teaches that cruelty can be well or
badly used, but using cruelty against other human beings can never be sanctioned. At the same time, while that statement seems to be marginally true, there are parts of
the rhetoric that can be torn apart. It seems that while Machiavelli might have given lip service to mans inhumanity to man, he does indeed condone cruelty. There are in
fact parts of Machiavellis The Prince that contends cruelty is a necessary influence. Sometimes Machiavelli contends that cruelty is evil, but at other times contends that it is necessary ("The
Morality," 2003). It does seem to be true that cruelty can be merciful, according to Machiavelli, in order to maintain order (2003). It is reminiscent of a pop
song where the lyrics were "cruel to be kind." Indeed, in some cases, according to this theorist, cruelty is a necessity. One can look at contemporary examples to prove this
point. For instance, there is something called an intervention in twelve step programs where everyone in the persons life gets together and surprise them with a gathering. At this gathering,
the person is told to either go to a rehab or lose the people in their lives. It seems cruel to give such ultimatums, but it is kind. If an
alcoholic or drug addict does get needed help, the individual will likely thank the people who just several months past seemed cruel. In Chapter XVII of The Prince, Machiavelli
