quite the opposite. They understand human failings and want to help. Machiavelli in particular seems to see people as rather weak. He sees leaders as having to be strong in order to lead well and is rather arrogant about that point. In fact, Machiavelli is not one to embrace democracy or to want to follow the will of the people. He just wants to do what is best for them, according to how he interprets that. Machiavelli is above all a leader who understands that the ends justify the means and the goal is always to do well for the people, whether or not they recognize what good will actually emerge. Machiavelli in his well known work The Prince, accentuates the relationship between the ruler and the ruled and this relationship seems to be rather autocratic. Again, this is not to say that Machiavelli does not care about the people. He does. In fact, there seems to be a great deal of support for the fact that Machiavelli always had the interests of the people at heart. This idea is very important when evaluating leadership. When leaders are stern, it does not necessarily mean that they do not value the people. Machiavelli contends that every ruler does not want to be mean or cruel leader and rather, they want to be merciful (58). This is true despite the fact that they sometimes appear to be less than concerned. Leaders, or good leaders, are concerned but they may have to effect tough discipline. An analogy is that sometimes a parent must exhibit tough love remedies by locking an older child out of the home or taking away something important to them.
