and first leader of the revolt" (1991, p. 513). The Columbia Encyclopedia says the Maccabees was a "Jewish family of the 2d and 1st cent. BC that brought about a
restoration of Jewish political and religious life" (2005). Eventually, however, the word came to be used when referring to Judas brothers and supporters (Saint Joseph Edition of the New American
Bible, 1991). They do agree the word was probably derived from the Hebrew, makkabah, which means hammer (BibleGateway.com, 2005; Saint Joseph Edition of the New American Bible, 1991). Because Israel
was considered to be located at the "Crossroads of the Earth," it has been under siege and conquered by other nations repeatedly (Daily Bible Study, 2003). In the first and
second centuries B.C., two branches of the Greek regime claimed Israel as their own: Ptolemies to the south in Egypt and the Seleucids to the north in Syria (Daily
Bible Study, 2003). Antiochus IV of the Seleucids took over Israel and began executing Jews (Daily Bible Study, 2003; Aguilar, 2000). For instance, he had all mothers who had circumcised
their sons put to death and hung the babies from their necks (1 Maccabees 1:59-61), anyone who refused to worship the pagan gods was put to death (Daily Bible Study,
