Implemented in December 1991, the Maastricht Treaty presents the potential for the European Union to establish itself as a strong leader in both the political and the economic world arenas.
The intent of the Maastricht Treaty is to complement the original intent of the European Union. That intent included the establishment of a bloc countries where goods could
be freely traded and citizens could travel largely unimpeded. That intent also extended to such aspects of government as environmental regulation, education and the sharing of information, national defense,
criminal justice, law enforcement, and health and welfare. The European Union has unified European countries as they have never been unified at any other point in history. The
Maastricht Treaty will undoubtedly work within that union to enhance the political and economic power of these countries and therefore their influence on the rest of the world. What
has emerged from the Maastricht Treaty is a stronger and more politically cohesive Europe, a Europe which can offer significant positive influence on the rest of the world in terms
of her enhanced leadership potential. To understand the full impact of the Maastricht Treaty as it relates to the European Treaty, one must
look somewhat further back into history than the point of implementation of either of these individual agreements. The European Union targets an enhancement of competitive forces, the lowering of
prices and an increase in customer satisfaction. Starting with the discussions in the 1950s about restructuring the economies of Western Europe, two alternatives for economic co-operation emerged (Hosli and
