west. AS one author notes, "Bret Hartes name is identified with Californian life" in the 19th century when it was still rough and untamed (World Wide School). One of his
short stories, The Luck of Roaring Camp, is a powerful tale of a camp filled with men, and one woman who gives birth, dies, and leaves behind and infant for
the men to nurture. As would be imagined it is a story of strong development and intricacy, and as such is one that can be explicated in many ways. The
following paper argues that the infant brings to the men a sense of community which reflects their need for women in their lives. The Luck of Roaring Camp
In the very beginning of the story these men are sitting around and clearly men who are less than desirable or enjoyable in normal civilization. While these men sat outside
and played cards this woman lay in a bed in a shack giving birth, and clearly painfully. But, "few of the spectators were, I think, touched by her sufferings" as
they were men, and rough men at that (Harte). "The assemblage numbered about a hundred men. One or two of these were actual fugitives from justice, some were criminal, and
all were reckless" (Harte). They were clearly loners and this woman giving birth was the only woman around, as well as a woman who the narrator says was rough and
perhaps less than lady-like. In this one sees a camp filled with less than desirable characters and they exist in a location
that is not civilized and incredibly remote. However, Harte had a powerful ability to write of such places and people and make it something human and touching perhaps. One author
