between Antony and Cleopatra adds additional elements of passion, an illicit affair, jeolousy, apparent betrayal and all consuming love. Antonys love for Cleopatra is destructive to his own marriages and political career. He loses the sense of strategy in his battles, elements of which before meeting Cleopatra were instinctual. The play opens with Anthony and Cleopatra in the palace in Alexandria as they profess their love and infatuation for each other. Their affair has already begun and because it is introduced in the initial act of the play, it is essentially the cornerstone to which the play is based. The political and battles scenes that take place throughout the play are used to frame the fragmented love affair between the two. Their love although idealistic is not the case of young na?ve lovers as would be with Romeo and Juliet. Antony and Cleopatra are older and supposedly wiser in the affairs of the heart. This does not detract from the passion of their love, but actually deepens it and makes the reader realize that as Antony continues to be under the power of his love for Cleopatra, his love has an additional level of sacrifice to his political and military career. Because they are older, their language of love seems so much more believable. Their initial dialogue of "If it be love, indeed, tell me how much." and, "Then must thou needs find out new heaven, new earth." (I. 1. 14,17) is romantic and flowery and not usual in relation to older lovers which endears the reader to them almost automatically. They are charismatic together and their passion for one another is apparent. For those readers who are accustomed to Shakespeares tragedies, this forbidden love scenario brings about a certain amount of fear for the leading couple. Cleopatra sees ...
