different stories, with nothing in common. But, while they are truly very different tales, they are also tales that possess some similarities. With that in mind the following paper compares
and contrasts the two stories. The Lottery and Oedipus the King In relationship to the differences in the two stories, the reader can well argue that they are
many. Jacksons story is one that takes place in more modern times and involves one small community and their odd practice of getting the town together once a year to
hold a lottery. This lottery has been going on for a long time, although no one really knows why. As one character states, " Theres always been a lottery" (Jackson).
The lottery involves pulling a name out of a black box and that person will be stoned to death by the entire town. In Oedipus the King the story
involves the mystery of who killed the king who was in position prior to Oedipus. The mystery is that Oedipus killed the king, not knowing he was a king and
not knowing that the king was Oedipus own father. Another part of the mystery involves the fact that the kings widow, whom Oedipus married, is actually Oedipus mother. In the
end Oedipus discovers all the truths and offers himself up to be banished, as was the plan in relationship to whoever killed the king. Clearly these stories, in relationship
to their plot and setting, are incredibly different. But, there are also elements that are perhaps similar. One such element is that which speaks of tragedy. Geothe once noted, "The
conflict on which a tragedy is based must ideally be one where there is no possible resolution" (BBC). In Jacksons story one can argue that the towns people, in their
