I when numerous prominent American authors relocated to Europe. Ernest Hemmingway, one of the Lost Generation, used the phrase in "The Sun Also Rises", his first novel from Paris
(Brady 9). The writers and artists of the Lost Generation had many reasons to be disillusioned with the outcome of the war. Our men had fought valiantly for
principles that they deeply believed in. Their reward had often been death or disfigurement. At the very best, these men were often gravely psychologically impacted by the horrors
of the war to end all wars. America itself had evolved during the war as well. The Lost Generation perceived the changes that had occurred as negative.
They felt that their country was focused solely on industrialization and business. Europe, in contrast, offered more of a cosmopolitan environment with people from a diversity of cultures and
lifeways. In the minds of the Lost Generation, that environment was more conducive to artistic expression. Many great stories sprang forth from the Lost Generation. Consider, for example,
