They are often overlooked or ignored and as such become subtle victims of a society and thus become lonely heroes. Such is the case with Thomas Manns Gustave in "Death in Venice" and the narrator in T.S. Eliots poem "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." The following paper examines the lonely hero from each story/poem. Mann In this particular story we have the character of Gustave von Aschenbach who is an incredibly fastidious man who believes that true art can only be created in "defiant despite" of the passions and weaknesses that corrupt an individual. He sets out in search a new environment where perhaps he can locate his own art. This takes him to Venice where he becomes obsessed with a young boy. In this obsession he finds perhaps, that part of him that is truly artistic, but he can really do nothing with it. His obsession is great and he is soon consumed by the illness, cholera, which has infected the area. He dies without ever truly brining his artistic nature and inherent spirit together. We see that Gustave was a man whose life and character were formed by "art, not the stern discipline of an active career" and these characteristics "had taken over the office of modeling these features. Behind this brow were born the flashing thrust and parry of the dialogue between Frederick and Voltaire on the theme of war; these eyes, weary and sunken, gazing through their glasses, had beheld the blood-stained inferno of the hospitals in the Seven Year War" (Mann 14). He was, in essence, a man who had experienced pain and suffering, a man who had looked to art in a very defined manner, ...
