man obviously living in an impoverished situation and a situation wherein his life is intricately linked with criminal activity. It is a story that some could argue was somewhat reminiscent of Salingers Catcher in the Rye for its youthful and rebellious approach to society. The following paper examines whether the main character is better or worse off at the end of the story. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner The reader can sense the independent and rebellious nature of the main character in this story when he states how "Running had always been made much of in our family, especially running away from the police" (Sillitoe 1). He also indicates how "Cunning is what counts in this life" (Sillitoe 1). In these simple statements the reader knows that this young man has a mind of his own, is rebellious in going against the system, and likely intelligent. But, he is not apparently rebellious against his family for he seems proud that he, along with his family, have a history of being rebellious and fighting against the system. As such this young man is not angry at his parents but rather the system and the fact that his parents, or father at the very least, are not causing him angst would further suggest that he is not likely to ever be a young man, or grown man, who would truly change. Children have a tendency to follow in their parents footsteps regarding ideals etc. and as such the point is that the young man does not seem to be in any dire situation concerning his identity or his position in relationship to being "better" or "worse" at the beginning.
