incidents was that she was beating him just as much and basically denied the charges. Denial and fear is typical in cases of domestic violence. A recent unusual case is
the one that seems to make the news a lot and involves Liza Minnelli. In 2003, Minnellis ex-husband David Gest filed a suit alleging that Minnelli had beaten
him where he was seriously injured; this occurred several months prior to filing the lawsuit ("The Smoking Gun: Archive," 2003). As a result of that incident, and other beatings, Gest
has to rely on many prescription medications because the domestic violence incidents would leave him in a state of pain ("The Smoking Gun: Archive," 2003). Gest also claims that Minnelli
is a "raging alcoholic" ("The Smoking Gun: Archive," 2003). While atypical, more and more cases of domestic abuse involve male victims. II. An Analysis of the Crime There
is a saying in the recovery movement that if one does not hand it back, they pass it on. That is, people who have been abused themselves will inevitably abuse
others if in fact they do not get help. Simpson (2000) writes: "In those families where abuse also is accompanied by exposure to violence, stealing, drug and alcohol abuse, or
prostitution, involvement in such activities becomes a realistic possibility" (p.22). In her book, Simpson (2000) pays much attention to differential association theory which suggest that when a person receives more
definitions aligned with disobeying the law than they do which favor the law, they will become delinquent. One may see this theory as relevant in the Minnelli case, even though
