simplest of things we have a tendency to rely on every day in our modern world. There were no such things as groceries stores and surely no such thing as a normal flushing toilet. The following paper examines what their lives were like, and then discusses what this particular writer would likely miss most if they lived in early Canada. Their Lives The first people in Canada had to rely on their own hands and their own intelligence when it came to food. They had to clear land to grow it, hunt for meat or raise their own livestock if they had it, and they gathered food from the wild. If they raised their own livestock they had to slaughter it themselves and they also had to know how to preserve it so that it would last through the winter. They had no electricity with which to help preserve it so they often would construct cellars to keep things cool, or would smoke meats and dry food to keep through winter. One author notes, "Fruits and vegetables were also sold to the general store in exchange for other goods" (How the Settlers Survived, 2005). They had no electricity, as mentioned, and as such any night or early morning activities were done with the use of candles for the most part, though some likely had oil lanterns as well. Any candles they used the made themselves. They were, in many ways, controlled by the time of year and the amount of daylight in a day and the more northern you go in Canada the less hours of daylight there are during long winter months.
